This dataset contains the Wilderness boundaries for the Tongass National Forest. The data contains polygons depicting National Forest System land parcels that are withdrawn from settlement, sale, location, or entry under some or all of the general and mineral laws in order to maintain other public values or purposes. The data was originally submitted to GSTC of all national forests through their Regional Offices for the USDA Forest Service's (FS) Roadless Area Conservation Initiative.
The data was consolidated at GSTC and sent out for review. Data was updated by the forests to reflect any corrections to Inventoried Roadless Areas and to include Special Designated Areas (SDA's), based on their existing forest plan. Additionally, data was reviewed and modified by Regional Land Status and Survey personnel. The data was resubmitted to GSTC July 12, 2000 for consolidation and publication.
This data was reviewed by the USFS Washingtom Office in 2001. The dataset will continue to be reviewed and updated as boundaries change. Currently, there is no set schedule for updates. Changes are made as needed.
All developments are fully compliant with the National Spatial Data Initiative (NSDI) and Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) standards.
The data should be displayed and analyzed at scales appropriate for 1:63360 scale data.
