Land cover map of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Walker et al. 1982)

The Landsat-assisted environmental mapping of the northern coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska was funded by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the US Geological Survey and published by the Cold Regions Research and Experimental Laboratory (CRREL) as input to the Environmental Impact Statement required under Section 1002 of the Alaska National Interest Land Conservation Act (ANILCA) of 1980.

The map was published at 1:250,000 scale, with 12 land cover categories (Walker et al. 1982). The report is divided into two parts. The first is devoted to the land cover map with detailed descriptions of the mapping methods and legend. The second part is a description of the study area, which focuses on five primary terrain types: thaw-lake plains, hilly coastal plains, foothills, mountainous terrain, and river floodplains. Topography, landforms, soils and vegetation are described for each terrain type, and mapped land cover units summarized for each.

The vegetation mapping of the coastal plain (the 1002 area) was updated in 1996, with a 30-m pixel resolution Landsat TM-based map, with 17 land cover classes (4 non-vegetated) (Jorgenson et al. 1994).
