Southeast Alaska Vessel Traffic Index, TNC, 2009

Data on marine vessel traffic for 2009 was obtained from the Marine Exchange of Alaska (http://www.mxak.org). These data record locations for all tracked vessels at 6 second intervals, and include vessal name, vessel type, speed, Marine Mobile Service Identity (MMSI), and destination. The vessel locations are recorded via remote recievers that have broad but incomplete coverage. While these data potentially provide utility for a wide range of applications, our purpose was to represent the general pattern of traffic throughout the region. All vessel locations where analyzed with a point density analysis at a 1 km radius.
