Vegetation Mapping of the Arctic Refuge Coastal Plain (Jorgenson et al. 1996)

This landcover map of the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Alaska was produced by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and published in 1995.

It is based on classification of 30-m resolution Landsat-TM satellite imagery, local topographic data, a map of terrain types, aerial photographs, and extensive field data from 1988-93. Sixteen landcover types are represented: 01 WET SEDGE TUNDRA; 02 WET/MOIST SEDGE TUNDRA; 03 MOIST/WET SEDGE TUNDRA; 04 MOIST SEDGE-WILLOW TUNDRA; 05 MOIST SEDGE-DRYAS TUNDRA; 06 MOIST SEDGE-TUSSOCK TUNDRA; 07 MOIST SHRUB TUSSOCK/WATERTRACK; 08 MOIST SHRUB/HIGH-CENTER POLYGON; 09 MOIST SHRUB TUNDRA; 10 DRYAS-GRAMINOID ALPINE TUNDRA; 11 RIPARIAN SHRUB; 12 DRYAS RIVER TERRACE; 13 PARTIALLY VEGETATED; 14 BARREN; 15 ICE; 16 WATER.
